I/C-Education Administration 1Providing junior instructors with an effective professional development program that consists of coaching and mentoring is imperative to developing their abilities and ensuring that they can continue to develop them.
At the conclusion of this period, the participant will be able to:
- Define professional development, mentoring, and coaching
- Define what an instructor professional development program may consist of
- Define positive traits of a coach/mentor and define their importance
- Define the roles and responsibilities of a coach and mentor
- Define the roles and responsibilities of the instructor being coached/mentored
- Have an understanding of the various leadership styles that are and may not be conducive to a coach and mentor
- Understand the importance of setting expectations for a new instructor and of the coach/mentor
- Understand the importance of providing constructive feedback to the junior instructor
- Understand the dynamics of a "difficult conversation" with a junior instructor
- Understand the need to "challenge" the instructor in areas they may not be comfortable
