Preceptors are ultimately the most important EMS teachers. Both statements are valid, because during clinical education the student will demonstrate and be evaluated based on his/her transference. A general rule for EMS educators is that not only will preceptors and FTOs teach the next generation of providers, they will determine how that generation will feel about the profession.

Participants in the session will be able to:
  1. To define the four roles of preceptors and FTOs
  2. Identify and define the types of clinicals and ride-alongs of students and new hires.
  3. Distinguish the difference between positive and negative feedback techniques.
  4. Appreciate the significant role preceptors and FTOs have in whether students and new hires develop a positive or negative view of the EMS profession.
